With 2024 quickly coming to an end, I scoured the interwebs one last time for any upcoming manga (and non manga) releases that are worth your time. Surprise, surprise. I found some. These licenses were announced late in the year, just in time for a fall release or possibly early winter 2025 should they get delayed. Without further ado, here are nine manga (and not manga) to look forward to reading this fall.

Table of Contents

Digital Releases Graphic features the manga covers of Tokyo Tarareba Girls Returns 2; Magical Girl Dandelion; That Beauty is a Tramp

Digital Releases

As of this post, these manga are digital-only. Sorry!

That Beauty is a Tramp by Hal Osaka (5 vols/ongoing)

Written by the same mangaka of Such a Treacherous Piano Sonata (also published digitally by Kodansha), That Beauty is a Tramp is an ongoing slice-of-life romance featuring a tomboyish woman and an androgynous model man.

Kodansha describes the story:

Cool and tomboyish Nagi wants a boyfriend, but has one big problem—ever since an incident in college, her body reflexively rejects the touch of any man. That is, until she encounters the beautiful male model Aran, who uses his androgynous look to effortlessly model both masculine and feminine styles. She’s shocked to discover that she can touch him without having a reaction, and when he asks her to join him in an upcoming photo shoot with a famous photographer, she agrees, on one condition—be her practice boyfriend for one month, and help her conquer her aversion once and for all.

That Beauty is a Tramp sounds like a good read for anyone who enjoys Cinderella Closet and My Androgynous Boyfriend  or anyone who is looking for stories featuring fashionable adult characters and queer themes. Kodansha published the first volume August 13. The third volume will be released on October 1. Much like Hal Osaka's previously released work, That Beauty is a Tramp is still digital-only as of this post. Learn more about the manga here.

Tokyo Tarareba Girls Returns 2 by Akiko Higashimura (6 vols/complete)

Tokyo Tarareba Girls Returns 2 is the romcom spin-off of Tokyo Tarareba Girls (published in print and digital by Kodansha), and this series shouldn't be confused with Tokyo Tarareba Girls Returns (published digitally by Kodansha). Tokyo Tarareba Girls Returns 2 follows a new group of girls as they strive to get their careers, financials, and love lives in order.

Kodansha describes the story:

30-year-old Reina Hirota’s chill life of snacking and binge-watching TV shows gets a wake-up call through a forgotten childhood dream buried in a time capsule. Suddenly, her content solitude seems more like a forever-solo voyage, prompting her to crawl off the couch and start husband hunting—not just to find love, but to help her family find their groove again. Now, if only she knew what she wanted—not just in life, but in a guy, too.

If you're searching for a story heavy on misadventures and female friendships, then definitely check out this series and Akiko Higashimura's earlier work Princess Jellyfish. You do not have to read Tokyo Tarareba Girls before picking up Returns 2, but I highly suggest that you do! Tokyo Tarareba Girls is my favorite Akiko Higashimura work thus far, and I hope we get more of Higashimura's works in print. (Fingers crossed that Returns 2 will be published in print.) The first volume of Returns 2 was released in July following its announcement at Anime Expo 2024. As of this post, you can read the first three volumes. Volume 4 will be released in November. Learn more here.

Magical Girl Dandelion by Kaeru Mizuho (3 chapters/ongoing)

Presently running in Shogakukan's Sho-Comi magazine, Magical Girl Dandelion is an action fantasy series about a girl and monster that team up to fight enemies. The series is brand new. There isn't much information about it outside of reading the magazine...until now. On October 3, 2024, Viz released the first three chapters of Magical Girl Dandelion via the manga reading subscription service and app VizManga.

Viz simply describes the manga as follows:

Magical girls and villains are enemies, but can neophyte Tanpopo's bond with the villain Shade topple that destiny?

The next chapter will be released on October 19. You can read the first three chapters and last three chapters FOR FREE via the app and website. Note: Magical Girl Dandelion will be the first new and ongoing shoujo simulpubed via the subscription service. It will be interesting to see how long it will go from digital-first/digital-only to print. Check out Magical Girl Dandelion here.

Alright, that covers the digital releases. Now, let's talk about the print releases.

The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All by Sumiko Arai (2 vols/ongoing)

Serialized on X/Twitter, this popular yuri title makes its print debut in English on October 22.

Yen Press describes the story:

Little does she know—this supposedly male employee is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! Mitsuki generally keeps to herself, but since her seat is right next to Aya’s, she can't help but be extremely aware of the other’s crush. Revealing the truth is out of the question—but perhaps getting closer to Aya wouldn’t be so bad...

Checkmate by TAN (mature-rated, manwha, 114 chapters/complete)

Another manwha joins Seven Seas' Webtoons imprint. Checkmate is a psychological BL drama that was digitally-exclusive to Lezhin until now.

Seven Seas describes the story:

Detached. Disinterested. Dispassionate. All words used to describe Soohyun and his uneventful, mediocre life. He’s nothing like he once was. As a teen, he had a fire, a passion burning within, all thanks to one person: bright-haired and brilliant Eunsung. Throughout high school, Soohyun obsessively competed with Eunsung for the top spot in all things, only to consistently come in second place. And as high school ended without victory, so did his passion for anything. But all this changes when, as an adult, he suddenly sees Eunsung again—except the other man is in the news, embroiled in scandal! Seeing Eunsung in a state of shame ignites something in Soohyun. Fiery hate, long thought dead, comes alive within him once more.

Determined to see a fallen Eunsung with his own eyes, Soohyun reinvents himself as a reporter and begins dishing out one dirty article after another. He’s sure that with each scathing article, Eunsung will come crawling to Soohyun and begging for mercy. Except, it doesn’t happen. Eunsung doesn’t react at all the way Soohyun expects! Just who is being manipulated, and who, the manipulator?

Checkmate will be published in full color. The first volume hits store shelves on October 29, 2024. Check it out here.

Shizumkai in the Land of Peace v. 1 manga cover

NOVEMBER

The Villainess and the Demon Knight by Nekota and Asahiko (light novel, 4 vols/ongoing)

Another light novel joins Seven Seas' Steamship line, the premiere smut romance imprint for women. The Villainess and the Demon Knight is officially the second light novel under the Steamship imprint. (The first light novel was Loyal Soldier, Lustful Beast.) Serialized since 2017, The Villainess and the Demon Knight is an isekai fantasy romance novel about...well title. The novel was adapted to manga in 2020, and Seven Seas published the first volume under the Steamship imprint in March 2023.

Seven Seas describes the story:

Being reincarnated as an otome game villainess is hard enough, but fate sure didn’t hold back on stacking the odds against Cecelia. Her engagement is broken off, the heroine is harassing her, and she’s forced to work in a brothel! To make matters worse, her first customer is none other than the heroine’s childhood friend and debaucherous leader of the Imperial Guard, Duke Lucas Herbst. Terrified, Cecelia finds herself relentlessly pursued, only to wake up the next day in his mansion—marked as his fiancée?! Bound to this unhinged knight, the troubled villainess must endure his obsessive love. But is his intoxicating affection a curse…or is it a blessing in disguise?

Having enjoyed the first two volumes of this spicy manga, I'm looking forward to reading the light novel. The first volume was released digitally in September 2024. The physical release will hit store shelves on November 5. Check out the series here.

Shimazaki in the Land of Peace by Gouten Hamada and Takeshi Seshimo (6 vols/ongoing)

Announced at Sakura-Con in March 2024, Shizumaki in the Land of Peace is a psychological action drama series about a man adjusting to normal life in Tokyo after living and fighting in a battlefield for 30 years.

Kodansha describes the story:

After surviving a terrorist incident as a child, Shingo Shimazaki was forced to join the League for Economic Liberations' revolutionary army. Now, thirty years later, he's back in Japan and trying to assimilate to a normal life. His Japanese may be awkward, and his grasp of ordinary tasks a little weak, but he has all the combat and surveillance training of a green beret. There are many kindhearted souls who want to help him - and a few not so kind ones who will do anything to stop him.

The award-winning manga has been serialized in Kodansha's Morning magazine since 2022. The first volume will hit store shelves on November 26, 2024. However, you can read the first few chapters for free now on K-Manga.

DECEMBER

With You, Our Love Will Make It Through by Chihiro Yuzuki (6 vols/ongoing)

With You, Our Love Will Make It Through is a romance slice-of-life drama about a high school girl who falls in love with a beast boy. Oh, yeah. This one is for the monster lovers out there. (Yen Press rated the manga "T" for "Teens.")

Yen Press describes the story:

When high schooler Mari, bumps into a fellow tardy student, she’s surprised to find out he’s a beastfolk who’s to attend her school! After all, it's not rare for beastfolk to coexist alongside humans, but it’s still uncommon, with the prejudice and all. Nervous to meet one at first, Mari soon learns there’s more to him than his furry exterior. In fact, the more she gets to know him, the more she finds herself drawn to him, his steadfastness, his kind-heartedness, and...body…

With You, Our Love Will Make It Through has been serialized in Manga Mee since 2021. Given the subject matter, I'm surprised we got the manga at all and quickly to boot. I'm also surprised that Yen Press is publishing this. I was expecting Seven Seas to pick it up. 💀 This manga keeps popping up on my X/Twitter feed, and the art alone makes me want to check it out. So, if you're looking for a shoujo that's a little on the wild side, look for With You, Our Love Will Make It Through in the bookstore on December 10, 2024.

The Yakuza and His Omega: Raw Desire by Chizu Aoi and Kiichi Kojima (mature-rated, 3 vols/ongoing)

Last, but not least, let's talk about The Yakuza and His Omega: Raw Desire. This is the second m/f pair omegaverse title published under Seven Seas' Steamship imprint, the first being Alpha Wolfgirl x Omega Wolfboy, and this is the third m/f omegaverse manga Seven Seas has published. (Seven Seas published Bite Maker: King's Omega, which I have reviewed here.) It's a good time to be an omegaverse fan!

Seven Seas describes the story:

Niikura Wakana is a struggling romance author whose latest challenge is to interview Tatara Kunimitsu, the irresistibly handsome and notoriously unattainable leader of the Koukyou Yakuza. Dubbed an alpha among alphas, Kunimitsu is an enigma wrapped in the allure of power. In her daring attempt to reach him, Wakana infiltrates a high-end club as a hostess, only to be ambushed by her first heat.

As her dormant omega traits awaken, her pheromones wreak havoc, drawing unwanted attention her way. Just as peril closes in, the very man she came to see rescues her. Will Wakana be able to navigate her burning attraction to Kunimitsu while untangling the secrets of her own untamed heart?

The first volume will hit stores just in time for Christmas on December 24, 2024. Check it out here.
